Neck pain is a common complaint and symptoms vary greatly from person to person. Symptoms: Symptoms can include pain in the neck and/or shoulders. Some people also get headaches or pins and needles into the arms. Other symptoms include stiffness, muscle spasm and difficulty with certain movements (such as looking over your shoulder when reversing).
Causes: Similar to low back pain, facet joints, ligaments, muscles and discs may all be contributing to your neck pain. Often it might be posture related from sitting looking at computers or with a poor desk setup. This can put unnecessary strain on your neck day after day. Whiplash is also a common cause of neck pain, resulting from the quick forwards and backwards movement during an accident.
Treatment: Treatment may include hands on therapy, including joint mobilisations and soft tissue work to help reduce pain and increase movement. Exercises to restore normal movement will also be given. Advice is also an important part of treatment to ensure no unnecessary stress is put on the neck, eg ergonomic assessment, postural advice.
